Do you have serious privacy concerns about Google Health?

A recent poll was taken over at TuDiabetes.com and Manny posted the results. Though the poll didn’t have too many participants, I was surprised to see that 43% had “Serious Privacy Concerns” about it.
I have the following reply:
“43% has “serious privacy concerns”? Wow, seriously?I can’t help but wonder how many of the people concerned are so because of specific reasons or simply because everyone says they should be.
I mean we already have pretty much every piece of “secret” info about us stored somewhere on the internet. We access our bank accounts and make highly sensitive financial transactions daily with our online banking but there are privacy concerns with storing info like “Allergies”, “Conditions” and “Age/Sex/Height” into places like Google Health?
If it isn’t Google it will be someone else, which we’re seeing more and more of. In the end if people have privacy concerns with Google specifically then at the least they’ll have the power of choice with all the other solutions. But seriously, it’s quite likely those same people are still using Google services daily for their other needs such as search.”
While I do think privacy is a big issue in certain context and situations, some areas in medical in particular, I think in the context of diabetes PHR tracking and management it isn’t a main concern.
What do you think? If you’re on Ning or the TuDiabetes Diabetes social network check out the discussion or let me know here.

Rails is a ghetto? Zed Shaw goes to war with Rails and the Rails community

Damn, he sure does go to town with this one. I didn’t know things were so messed up for him regarding Rails. Its a real shame to see him want to leave so bad cause the guy is brilliant and we all love Mongrel. It is almost hard to believe some of it but then again I’ve heard a whole lot of stuff about the Rails core team.
Its a long, PISSED OFF rant, but entertaining none-the-less. I’m not sure just what to say about it all yet but I have to say the best part is the DHH part where he said they used to need 400 restarts a day!!

Jack Bauer in 1994 on AOL 3.0 - Hilarious

As a major 24 fan myself as well as someone who used to be on AOL 3.0 on my 9600bps modem, something about this parody rang home.
Ah yes, the good ol’ days of paying for the Internet hour by hour. And wait, huh? Whats that? I get 5 free bonus hours for the month if I sign up with AOL today? Awesome!
I thought I was soooo cool with my 4MB of Ram and 25Mhz CPU which was an upgrade from my 8Mhz Mac Plus with 1MB Ram. ONE MEGABYTE!!!!
But I couldn’t complain because as Bill Gates said:
“640K ought to be enough for anybody!”
Its really funny to see how so much has changed, things were so much simpler then. Though I love technology to death, I really am glad to be able to say “I existed before everyone and their dog had a computer and was online 24/7”.
Back in the day when you actually had to find creative outlets and actually go outside to interact with the real world. The social disconnect back then was still at a minimum. Good times.
Some of my fav quotables from this:
- “He’s got total control of our geocities page”, “god help us”
- “I can see him, he’s hacking into the mainframe”, “But we just installed Windows 3.1, no way!”, “He’s in”, “Bogus!”
- “Gotta go Jack”, “Why?”, “We’re paying for the Internet, BY THE HOUR”.
- “Email him the bomb schematics.”, “It’s 150 Kilobytes!”, “Jesus! Print them out and we’ll send a bike messenger”

RailsConf Europe 2007 - DHH Keynote Video

I was also able to get some of DHH’s keynote while I was sitting in the front. It is only the first 25min but he gives some highlights and insights into the future of Rails. This one will also be a bit shaky in the beginning but should stabilize.
I know that O’reilly professionally recorded the keynotes so I’m sure those will turn up eventually, I just can’t find them
Update: GotThingsDone has the whole keynote up in three parts.
