OS X bluetooth tethering on the Qtek 9100, HTC Wizard, MDA Vario etc in WM5
Seeing that unlimited EDGE dataplans are easy to come by these days, GPRS Dial Up Modem capability over bluetooth is a highly valued feature, especially under Mac OS X. This basically allows you to utilize your phones data connection as a modem for your laptop and get decent connectivity speeds (Around 10-25k/s on EDGE networks). It is quick easy to do in windows (I will be posting an article on this soon too.) and from what I hear works even better over the USB cable.
I found a great article about bluetooth tethering a device in OS X and think it might be useful for many others out there. It works on my Qtek 9100 and OS X 10.4.5. You’ll have to change the username and password for your network provider. If you have a working phone #, username and password feel free to comment here and I’ll add it to the post for others to use on that network.
So far, this is the login info for the following carriers:
Cingular:
Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Enter 99# as the phone number. I also hear *99**# might work.
T-Mobile Thanks to tim from www.timaldridge.com:
Account: *
Password: *
Use *99# as the telephone number.

Thanks! for the link- I’ve been banging my head against the wall trying to get my Qtek 9100 connected to T-Mobile GPRS/EDGE via Bluetooth on my MacBook and now I’m up and running. So nice! Thanks again, I enjoy your site. -Tim
Oh, yes: for T-Mobile
Use *99# as the telephone number. And ”*” for both the account name and password.
Hey Tim,
Excellent, I’m glad it help you out a bit! Nothing like the freedom of online mobile computer via a nicely tethered connection! Though I hear the USB cable (for PC’s) connection is much faster and less flaky, but I don’t think you can create the USB connection over a mac? I’ll have to look into it. I’m glad you enjoy the site!
P.S How are you finding the speeds? I’ve seen and heard people talk about 18k/s-25k/s over BT & EDGE GPRS.
Hey Tim,
Thank You very much for putting this up here. I was actually about to take back my T-mobile MDA, becuase I couldn’t use it as a BT Modem but thanks to this site it now works. And as for speed I seem to be getting about 10k/s with spikes around 16k/s which is a vast improvement from the 3-5 k/s I got with my Nokia 6600. anyway thank you again.
Kyle,
Glad you’ve got it working. I too get around 10k/s. Though I’m using an EDGE GPRS network here in The Netherlands. My friend who works for Cingular uses his Qtek 9100 via bluetooth on his XP laptop and gets 20-25k/s interestingly enough. I wonder what different bluetooth setup he has with his windows PC that would get him 2x the speed as my powerbook? I hear its even much faster via USB cable though.
I just tore some hair out over this. Bandwidth on the device itsel was about 150kbps down. Via bluetooth modem on my mac, I was getting about 50-60k down. Then I looked at the ipaq modem script. I saw:
!
! Set serial port speed 57600, all interface signals off
!
serreset 57600, 0, 8, 1
Duh! Changed this to
serreset 460800, 0, 8, 1
(stolen from another script). Now I get similar speeds on device and on laptop.
mickey
Mickey,
Wow, I guess were both missing some hair. Good looking though! I’ll definitely do this myself, thanks.
Kyle, Mickey, Marston- Haven’t been back here in awhile, glad to see that the comments are
I’ll check it out when I get a new one. Those Merom MBP’s are going to be awesome.
helping us achieve success with our connections. Mickey, that is great, I would try it on my MacBook Pro
but it just got stolen
Kyle, your speeds are definitely on the low side. Make sure that your Settings under Connections are correct. I was
getting slower speeds the old T-Mobile WAP access point. In GPRS, I use internet2.voicestream.com ( in CA, USA ) as
my access point and speeds are much higher ( comparible with a 56k modem ). Also, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewforum.php?f=35 and there is a ton of stuff there on making you little MDA ( HTC Wizard ) go
faster. OMAPclock utility, updated ROMs, and the cache tweaks make a huge difference.

Hmm. I have the MDA Vario II (on T-Mobile with Web n Walk) and a G4 iBook running 10.4.8.
I have followed instructions to the letter but can’t get this to work.
I get a ‘connection’ to my MDA from ‘Internet Connect’ on the Mac, but it dosent dial-up to 3G or GPRS network on the phone.
If I am already connected to network, it disconnects it. If I am not connected to the network, the mac just sets up a local connection to the phone.
If I then run ‘Wireless Modem’ and ‘start Bluetooth’ connection, the 3 boxes (‘Connection’, ‘Send’ and ‘Recieve’) are all flashing.
I have tried many dfferent alternatives in every setting but cant get it to work. It just wont trigger the MDA to dial-up to the network.
Anyone else got this problem? FYI, my Nokia 6320 worked perfectly as a BT modem.
Stumped
Roostaar
DOH! I cant believe it. It was connected all along. I disabled my Airport connection and Google fired up. What was throwing me was that the MDA dosent give any visible sign that it has connected to the 3G network. I therefore thought that no connection was being made.
http://www.pcpitstop.com reports a 1.2MB connection. Amazing!
I didnt think that BT was that quick? I did just buy a new BT 2.0 dongle to go with the new MDA Vario II. Maybe thats it?
Sweet. So am I being charged by the MB or by the second here? It’s a shame that my GPRS monitor cant monitor the data? Or can it?

Can anyone upload the edited script to enable 220kbps download?
I tried Script Editor but it wont open the iPaq script. I am using the Windows 460k script at the moment and get downloads of about 35kb/s at present on the t-mob 3G network.

Hey Roostaar,
Glad you got it up and running. 1.2MB? Nice. So you have a Vario II? 1.2MB probably means you’re connected to a UMTS or HSDPA network, I’m CERTAINLY not getting that via bluetooth over my EDGE GPRS network. I’m looking to upgrade to the Vario II (or equivalent) quite soon anyways myself.
I don’t know of any 220kbps scripts but I’ll keep an eye out.
Using Windows Mobile GSM 460 Script in OS X 10.4.8 tethering on MDA Bluetooth Windows Mobile 5 was working beautifully. Downloaded software upgrade from 4.1 to 4.1 from Tmobile and it was zooming even better. Upgrated to a faster Intel Core 2 Duo (Same OS X 10.4.8) and I have not been able to make it work. The only difference I notice is before I was able to set Incoming Serial to COM 6 and Outgoing Serial to COM 7 in the MDA. Now, It won’t admit serial 6. If I set Incoming Serial to 7 it wont let me set outgoing serial, and if I set outgoing serial to 7 it won’t let me set incoming serial. Receive Connecting – Authorizing – Failed to Authenticate Message. Any clue?
Hey J,
Hrm, that doesn’t sound good at all :-
I’ve had plenty of experiences of the tethering just screwing up like that with hours of troubleshooting with no luck. If I hear of a solution for this, I will definitely let you know. You might want to try a hard-reset on the phone too. Good luck.
Hi, I’m a complete newbie on this area but I’m trying to make a internet connection between a macbook pro running mac os x 10.4.8
and a qtek 9000 with web and walk from t-mobile (Dutch contract)
I allready tried the *99# , * and * as password and stuff, but it didn’t work.
You talk about a qtek 9100, is it different in settings??
on the mac you’re also able to choose a configuration, default is “other”, click on it you can choose “edit configurations” click again and you’ll get a new field in wich there are modem options, the default here is
“Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90)” but there are like a hundred other options some called motorola or ericson or nokia, others are called vodafone or at&t , but nothing like qtek or mda vario or t-mobile.
should I be here in the first place???
Does anyone have the answer? HELP
By the way did you see the introduction of the iphone by Steve Jobs on the applesite?
I definitely getting one of these end of summer
bye, Frank
Brilliant. Just set this up my T-mobile MDA Vario (HTC Wizard) and it worked first time. I’ve never been able to get this to work in windoze either.
I just did what mickey suggested used the texteditor and changed the script to serreset 460800, 0, 8, 1 and I get 214 kb/s down and 64 kb/s up.
! Set serial port speed 57600, all interface signals off
!
serreset 57600, 0, 8, 1
Duh! Changed this to
serreset 460800, 0, 8, 1
