I’ve just found out Zed Shaw (Creator of Mongrel) has released a PDF book about setting up/deploying Ruby applications with Mongrel.
Check it out: http://www.awprofessional.com/bookstore/
In case you haven’t used or heard of Mongrel before, I’ll have to say its the best Ruby server out there and I definitely recommend you try it out if you’re deploying Ruby or Ruby on Rails web apps.
The thing is just FAST and from what I’ve seen much more stable and secure than FastCGI. We’re using it for SugarStats (along with Nginx as the webserver/Rails request proxy) and the combination with Nginx is pretty much unbeatable.

So I’ve added yet another one to my long list of podcasts which I listen to regularly (I’m at around 40 now) and this one is by the Joynet.com guys called Ps Pipe Grep. If you’re looking for a good ol’ time geeking out, give it a listen. They are known advocates of high-performance networking, storage and Solaris. Some things covered in the first episode:
- Rails, Ruby VM, JRuby
- VPS (Virtual Private Servers)
- Unbreakable Linux by Oracle
- Suns new blackbox
In the second episode they go into depth regarding true grid and cluster computing.

There is a sweet article on eweek about how EBay deals with its storage issues and a glimpse into how their systems scale.
It gives some interesting stats on the usage:
- The site averages more than 1 billion page views per day.
- Users trade about $1,700 worth of goods on the site every second.
- A vehicle sells every minute.
- A motor part or accessory sells every second.
- Diamond jewelry sells every 2 minutes.
- The site currently has about 600 million listings and about 204 million registered users.
- 1.3 million people make all or part of their living selling on eBay.
WOW. Some other neat facts:
- They’ve been charted to have 99.94% uptime
- They utilize 2 PETABYTES of raw data daily
- They add about 10 TERABYTES per week of storage
- Have 170 Win2000/Win2003 servers
- Have 170 Linux (RHES3) servers
- Use 3 Solaris machines
- Use Sun E10000 for their database back-end servers
They also go in a bit about who they use for indexing, load-balancing and a bit on their application server and custom software. Interesting stuff, check out the full article: Web 2.0: How High-Volume eBay Manages Its Storage
