This is very unfortunate to hear, they’ve been around for as long as I can remenber. I’ve had some of the best times of my life at Six Flags Valencia… sigh I hope this doesn’t mean the shutdown of the parks.
“Six Flags announced plans Thursday to sell or close six of its properties, including the chain’s once-flagship park, Magic Mountain, in Valencia, Calif.”

Logitech Cordless Desktop S530 Laser for Mac

Ahh yes mmmmmm smell that? Yes thats the smell of brand new hardware. As a nice little birthday gift I got the Logitech Cordless Desktop S530 Laser for Mac. I must say, VEEERY nice.
Now, for the last 5-6 years and the last 4 keyboards I had were ALL Microsoft keyboards. Not just any Microsoft, but I have fallen in love with the “Natural” Keyboard series they have going. With the latest revision in their natural series they did a small redesign and renamed it to the “Ergonomic” series. The last keyboard I had was the Microsoft Comfort Wireless Desktop which overall, was very nice. But it was not as flat as I wanted and for sure felt there was another solution in which I could type faster and with less energy, you know, important things when you work on computers allll dayyy loonng.
As my main computer is my 12” powerbook, lately I’ve been typing alot on it instead of having it hooked up desktop style. Let me tell you, there is NOTHING faster than typing on a powerbook. I am completely in love with the built in keyboards on them. So I needed to replicate this in my desktop configuration. Lucky for me Logitech just released this beauty, I saw it on http://www.uncrate.com/ and had to have it.
Impressions
First impressions are that it is very slick and THIN. It compliments the mac style very nicely and looks like it came from Apple themselves. The feel of the keys are very “spring/scissor” like, close to the powerbook itself but not quite as flat. The thing really is made for mac, you can configure the thing in a million ways and it has just as many buttons on the sides.
A button dedicated for scrolling, volume, muting, media keys, spotlight, CD eject button, back buttom, homepage button, email button and on/off power button to shut off the computer. A thats just on the keyboard.
The Logitech laser mouse is very nice as well. Very smooth and accurate in its tracking. It felt kinda light when I took it out of the box but once I put in the included batteries it felt quite solid. The mouse has dedicate forward/back thumb buttons, dedicated volume up/down and mute buttons along with verticle / horizonal scrolling and scroll wheel click. Oh yeah, and both the keyboard and keyboard have battery indicators and are supposed to be very low power and last up to 6 months on regular batteries.
Both are as wireless as can be and have a wireless reciever that works very well and only takes up one USB port. First thing I did was configure this thing to integrate into my workflow. Having all these buttons on the actual keyboard is great. On the mouse I have one of the thumb buttons to espose show all windows, the other thumb button set to minimize window. I reconfigured the volume up and down button to switch back/forward between my desktop manager 8 desktops I always have going on. Finally I set the mute button as the back button in my browser.
I really don’t see though why they have the exact same buttons on the mouse AND the keyboard (volume up/down and mute), seems kinda redundant to me, but perhaps they were just trying to fill space on the keyboard?
So overall I’m quite impressed and happy with this, a great gift indeed (Thanks babe!). I’ll have to see how much having a “non-ergonomic” keyboard affects my wrists and such. But the typing speed is worth it, I definitely recommend it.

HTC Hermes / HTC TyTN Coming in July “Ohhhh yeah”

Ahh yes, keeping up in the Jones’. Almost out now is the HTC TyTN aka the HTC Hermes, basically the successor to the HTC Wizard / Qtek 9100 that I have now.
This device is basically everything I wish the Qtek 9100 originally was. Faster, smaller, 2-way video conferencing, 2 megapixel camera, HSDPA/Tri-Band UMTS support, 802.11b/g, GSM Quad-band with EDGE GPRS. As quoted from MobileGazette.com:
“The TyTN follows a now-familiar design that we’ve seen in other HTC devices, with a 240×320 pixel 2.8” touch-sensitive display that flips between lansdcape (wide) and portrait (tall) modes. There’s also a 2 megapixel camera, 64Mb of internal memory with microSD expansion and WiFi support. The processor is a 400MHz Samsung unit.HTC TyTN HTC say that the TyTN is HSDPA enabled, so presumably it should work with 3.5G out of the box. It also supports tri-band UMTS 850/1900/2100 MHz plus GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz with GPRS and EDGE. Add to that 802.11b and 802.11g wireless ethernet, and the HTC TyTN is easily the best connected device we’ve ever seen. (850 and 1900 MHz UMTS networks are being rolled out in North America).”
One word: “Sweeeeeeeet”. Available in Europe in black and silver (black for me this time around) beginning in July and you can bet I’m alllll over it. I will be sure to post a thorough review and perhaps consider switching providers to enable the UMTS/HSDPA network support.

OS X desktop switching via ambient light sensor?

As seen on digg, there a youtube video showing this in action. If it is real, this is seriously sweet. Switching desktops with the wave of your hand, though the sensitivity would have to be set right or this could get REALLY annoying. They need to build this into external keyboards. Check out the video here: OS X ambient light sensor desktop switching
