Ruby on Rails TextMate Cheatsheet

I used to do all my coding in SkEdit, now that I’m starting to code in Rails/Ruby I’ve been playing around with TextMate as almost everyone who programmes in Rails on a mac uses it.
I think I like SkEdit better feature wise, though it just doesn’t have the Ruby/Rails syntax highlighting etc, though that isn’t a big deal. To help me deal with TextMate a bit more I found a pretty cool cheatsheet that outlines most of the common snippet commands to create common code.
You can get the PDF here:
Cheatsheet PDF
And you can also find the Ruby on Rails cheatsheet itself here too, though only in PNG format:

Reboot 8 here I come!

All right, I’ve finally signed up for theReboot 8 conference in Denmark on June 1st – 3rd. I found out about this great conference shortly after the last one ended. I had really wished I had made it, from all I’ve read and heard it looks like such a great conference.
Also I loved Denmark last time I went to visit last August, so I decided to register for the conf and go there again. I was debating going, but after server unrelated people I told about the conference told me “Wow, you should go, it sounds like it was made specifically for you!”, I thought about it and had to agree with them.
As it says on the website:
reboot is a community event for the practical visionaries who are at the intersection of digital technology and change all around us… 2 days. 400 people. A journey into the interconnectedness of creation, participation, values, openness, decentralization, collaboration, complexity, technology, p2p, humanities, connectedness and many more areas. Applied towards us as individuals, citizens, teachers, culture workers, entrepreneurs, creators and change makers.
Sounds good huh? If it sounds of interest to you, I’d definitely check it out. I’m checking out hotels at the moment, but the parties are supposed to be pretty good so I might end up crashing on someones floor. If you’re going to Reboot definitely let me know and hopefully a group of us can get together. I got to find a whole lot of good restaurants (even Vegan/Vegetarian) throughout downtown and a club or two. Hope to see some of you there!

Fresh back from the mini-vacation

Ah yes, we all have to take breaks once an a while. I just got back from a mini weekend vacation to a spa-resort up in north Holland. I would definitely recommend it to anyone within The Netherlands or traveling to here that want some relaxation. The prices are quite affordable and they have ALL the facilities you could wish to have access to. Lodging, breakfast & dinner were all included.
Check em out here: http://www.fontananieuweschans.nl/ . You’ll get all the relaxation, steam rooms, saunas and naked Europeans you can handle. No internet access besides the lobby computer, but thats something you don’t need when trying to “get away”

Understanding Symbols in Ruby

Its been an absolute blast so far learning RoR and Ruby. After doing much reading on Rails, I decided to try as much as I could to understad its base (Ruby) technology. So I’ve been catching up on my Ruby for the past week or so, its quite a beautiful language. Coming from PHP/MySQL programming, I have many things to “unlearn” as it were. Now I’m not a hard-core programmer by any stretch of the imagination, I love to dabble though. Also being MAJOR right brained individual, learning logistic programming used to be something of an impossibility for me, but over the years I’ve balanced myself out quite a bit through web scripting.
One of the things in Ruby I had a difficult time grasping was the concept of Symbols, (:sybmol) what they were and what they were good for. For example, from Poignants Guide to Ruby, it states:
“Symbols are words that look just like variables. Again, they may contain letters, digits or underscores. But they start with a colon. Symbols are lightweight strings. Usually, symbols are used in situations where you need a string but you won’t be printing it to the screen.”
Well thats great an all, but I still wasn’t quite sure. I did bit of searching and found an excellent post explaining it in a manner I could process easier over on glu.ttono.us.
If you’re interesting in learning symbols in Ruby from a different point of view, check it out here
- UPDATE *
I found another great article, this one meant for Ruby Newbies but explains the concept of symbols in a programming neutral manner and compares how it can be viewed from different languages. Check it out: http://www.troubleshooters.com/codecorn/ruby/symbols.htm

I was browsing around and I found a nice little tidbit of info from Duncan Davidson’s blog. By modifying the MySQL config on development boxes you can make it much more secure. Its probably mostly for the super security anal but good none-the-less. Check it out here:
