I’m a big user of the 37signals services such as Backpack for personal information organization and Basecamp for collaborative group project management. Today they released their new web-based tool called Campfire.
It allows easy group chat for business and I can’t wiat to try it out. Think of it as easy, simple IRC for the masses. I can think of many of my own applications for this service and hope it gets tightly integrated with Basecamp soon as well.

Camino 1.0 Released

The OS X native browser Camino has just been released in version 1.0. If anyone else has used Camino they know it has taken a VERY LONG while to get to the 1.0 release. Camino is my browser of choice for OS X because of its speed, it just CAN’T be beat. It is amazingly fast, and even faster with the Camino G4 or G5 Optimized versions which I run.
Since I usually have 15 to 25 tabs open at any given time, memory leaking within my browser is a BIG issue for me. Before Camino having multiple windows with multiple tabs in one browser program wasn’t an option, I have to have multiple browsers with multiple windows and multiple tabs open to get work done…I sure did say “multiple” a whole lot…
I used to have Safari and Firefox or Flock open at once. Firefox is great and I really thought I could never live without sessionsaver, but the thing just sucks up CPU and memory. Even when all windows are minimized with static webpages open, it takes up 10-20% CPU just idling. The great thing about Safari is I can have 20 tabs open and if I minimize it, it uses 0% CPU. But its buggy as all hell. Optimized Camino was a great middle point for me, even with 20-25 tabs open it takes between 2-10% CPU on idle and is very good with memory management. If there was one thing I wish it has it would be tab saving, hopefully in the future I’ll get my wish.
You can get the latest Camino 1.0 release here

MacBook Pro silently upgraded to 2.16Ghz

It seems Apple has updated the MacBook Pro line with upgrade CPU’s even before it begins shipping the ones announced at MacWorld! The initial release came in 2 configurations, 1.6xGhz and 1.83Ghz. If you check out the Macbook Pro in the Apple store, it now shows configurations in 1.83Ghz and 2.0Ghz.
Another weird thing is in the Apple store specs, it says 2.0Ghz and “Upgradable to 2.16Ghz”. So you can choose the 1.83Ghz model, and then a 2.0Ghz model but you can upgrade that 160Mhz for $300
It seems kind of unecessary. Why not just have a 1.83Ghz and a 2.16Ghz and skip 2.0 altogether? Perhaps they like nice round numbers? Hrm.

A little bit ago I posted about my thoughts on perhaps would could by some attention disorders I may have.
I found a really cool and funny article about the advantages of ADD in a high tech world.
“It seems to me ADD and the technology industry is a natural fit. The constant change of the high tech world can be stressful and troubling for some people but it%u2019s often stimulating and energizing for the ADDer. A great source of Dopamine hits. Although, there are no specific statistics a number of other ADD experts I%u2019ve talked to agree with my observation.”
The author Quily sees 10 advantages of having ADD in a high tech career:
- The Ability to Hyperfocus.
- Rapid Fire Mind.
- Multitasking at Will.
- High Energy Level.
- Highly Creative.
- Quick Learner.
- Stimulus Seeking Brain.
- Constantly Scanning your Environment.
- Great in a Crisis.
- Risk Taker.
I believe that pretty much sums me up in a nutshell. Even though I don’t have a specific prognosis for this, perhaps I should be grateful considering my line of work?

After being rumored for so long it is finally here, the Cingular 8125. The HTC Wizard AKA Qtek 9100 in Cingular branding for the USA. Now they can all have a full qwerty keyboard, EDGE GRPS, WiFi and Windows Mobile 5.
The specs are identical to the HTC Wizard/Qtek 9100 which I reviewed before, the outside doesn’t look the same though, a bit more boxy. The 8000 is the same as the 8125 without the camera. They start at $299 with a 2 year plan and are available on Cingular’s website now. This might be a good time to pick one up and take advantage of Cingulars UNLIMITED EDGE data plans. I tested the EDGE with my Qtek 9100 and it was pretty fast in California.
Side Note T-Mobile will be releasing their MDA Vario in the US which is identical to function and style to the Qtek 9100 and Cingular 8125 soon as well.
Cingular 8125 & 8000 Quick Specs:
- Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for enhanced global use
- Windows Mobile 5.0
- 128MB SDRAM / 64MB ROM
- TI OMAP 200MHz Processor
- Integrated, sliding QWERTY keyboard
- 2.8” QVGA 320×240 64K Color LCD Touch Screen
- Integrated Bluetooth Class II
- Integrated 802.11b support
- Integrated Mini-SD slot for greater storage and expansion
- Optional 1.3 mega-pixel camera
