Fixing Firefox and Camino Memory Leaks

A great post over at the Inside Firefox developer blog where the lead developer on the Firefox project talks about Firefox memory leak or “feature” and how to modify the settings to fix it. I run Camino in OS X exclusively and have applied the settings and have noticed a similar performance increase as I at any one time have 20-30 tabs in multiple windows open. Good stuff.
They speak about modifying the "browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers" in the “about:config” settings.
“What I think many people are talking about however with Firefox 1.5 is not really a memory leak at all. It is in fact a feature. To improve performance when navigating (studies show that 39% of all page navigations are renavigations to pages visited < 10 pages ago, usually using the back button), Firefox 1.5 implements a Back-Forward cache that retains the rendered document for the last few session history entries. This can be a lot of data. It’s a trade-off. What you get out of it is faster performance as you navigate the web. ”

Woman severed arm found after car crash, still clutching her cell phone

“A Letcher County woman suffered a horrible injury early Thursday when her arm was severed in a car crash on the Mountain Parkway in Clark County.”
“Sheila Vice, a nurse’s aide, and an off-duty EMT from another county stopped to help, and put a tourniquet on Dotson’s arm to stop the bleeding. Her arm was found near the accident still clutching a cell phone.”
This is just freakin crazy. I guess she REALLY knows about the term “hands free” now, in more ways than one.
Don’t forget the moral of the story kids! Damn, I wonder if they were able to reattach her arm? Western medicine has come a long way… That would be crazy if they could, but the phone was fussed to her hand and they couldn’t get it off and it was permanently attached to her for the rest of her life.

I updated my photography page with a few new pictures (or relatively) I had. Some are from the recent trip to Hawaii and the states.
I got a really cool shot of the hardened lava drop ceiling in lava tube we have on our property there, it was pretty cool. Anyways, just click on the photography link at the top of the page to check a few of them out.

Kizzy and I went to the Art fair Rotterdam today. It was very packed but well worth it to me. I was really vibing with some of the artists and alot of it appealed to me. I didn’t have my main camera with me so these pics are only at 1.3MP because I took them on my Qtek 9100. I think the pictures turned out pretty good none-the-less as the lighting was pretty decent.

I must have seen atleast 10-15 powerbooks throughout the show, real “Artists” huh? I felt like I* should have been walking around with an espresso too. Too bad I don’t drink coffee anymore, I guess I’ll never fit in ;-). I’ll try as hard as I might. I have my own powerbook and even *almost got an espresso myself.
Check out the rest at my photo gallery

Qtek 9100, HTC Wizard, MDA Vario, Cingular 8125 WM5 performance registry hacks

After lots of searching and trying to figure this out, I’ve managed to come across some great speed and 802.11 wireless hacks for my Qtek 9100 Windows Mobile 5 phone.
Initially I was bummed because when I upgraded my ROM to 1.6.7.1, the speed increase was great but it crippled 802.11G support. Now I’ve found some registry hacks that will not only enable Wireless G to work, it speeds up the device quite a bit by upping some of the filesystem and memory caches.
A little techie I know, but below are the commands I executed to get the results, you can use any windows mobile 5 registry editor:
NOTE: One or two of the key’s might not be in your registry. I just created them and it worked fine. Also the “dword” isn’t part of the value, its the registry key type. They are all usually already dword so you most likely will not have to change it. Just note it when creating a new registry key.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GWE\Menu]
“AniType”=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd]
“EnableIndicator”=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS]
“CacheSize”=dword:00000400
“EnableCache”=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\fsreplxfilt]
“ReplStoreCacheSize”=dword:00000400
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\TNETWLN1\Parms]
“dot11SupportedRateMaskG”=dword:00000008
“dot11SupportedRateMask”=dword:00000001
As I said, now my 802.11G works and my devices feels quite a bit snappier. Please note you do need to do a soft reset after you run all the registry hacks. Either use the pin-hole reset button or hold down the power button till it asks you if you’d like to shut it off.
DISCLAIMER: These hacks worked fine for me with no problem, but run these registry modifications as your own risk.
