Back to Back to Back to Back …

Ah yes, I’m finally back from a much needed vacation. Its always nice to get out to Hawaii, sip Mai Tai’s on the Beach and just relax.
One thing though I wouldn’t recommend anyone doing is if you have a REALLY long distance to go, try to break it up. I thought it would be a good idea to go straight from Hawaii to Europe in one motion so thats how I scheduled things. It basically came down to 3 back to back 6-7 hour flights, going back to the future 12+ hours and having lots of time to sit on my butt.
Good Times.
But it was all worth it. I even came back with some Christmas/Work goodies in the form of a new 30gig Video Ipod, 24” Core 2 Duo iMac (which i’ll review later) and a new Canon point and shoot :-).
For now I’ll just go back to adjusting to my jet lag and have more updates shortly.

AHhh, can you hear that? Its the sound of the waves crashing while I’m laying the Hawaiian sand sipping a Mai Tai. Beautiful. I’ve been out visiting some family and friends and like always there is no place like Hawaii.
In the meanwhile I’ve gotten plenty of cool new gear, updates about SugarStats and some funny links to share. Stay tuned for more detailed posts. Mahalo!

What will Happen when Universal Tries to Renegotiate with Apple

Pretty Hilarious. In case you haven’t already read it: http://daringfireball.net/2006/12/apple_universal_conjectural_transcript
I could post an excerpt but I don’t want to spoil it. I’ll just leave you with the setting…
“Universal Music Group Chief Executive Doug Morris said on Tuesday he may try to fashion an iPod royalty fee with Apple Computer Inc. in the next round of negotiations in early 2007. Universal, the world’s largest music company, owned by French media giant Vivendi, was the first major record label to strike an agreement with Microsoft Corp. to receive a fee for every Zune digital media player sold.”

Interesting post over at the Ririan Project I found. I found this pretty useful actually, here are some that I personally think or funny and/or do:
“2. Refill the bowl. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that two servings of whole-grain cereal (Cheerios count) a day can reduce a man’s risk of dying of heart disease by nearly 20 percent.”
“18. Scramble an egg. They’re relatively low in saturated fat, and they’re packed with betaine, a compound that helps lower homocysteine levels in the blood by as much as 75 percent. Eggs are one of the few good food sources of betaine.”
“25. You don’t want fries with that. In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the exercise and nutritional habits of 80,000 women were recorded for 14 years. The researchers found that the most important correlate of heart disease was the women’s dietary intake of foods containing trans fatty acids, mutated forms of fat that lower HDL and increase LDL (bad) cholesterol. Some of the worst offenders are french fries.”
“62. Smile. Researchers at Harvard kept tabs on 1,300 healthy men for 10 years. At the end of the study, they found that individuals with the most positive attitudes at the start of the trial were half as likely to have experienced heart problems as men with more negative attitudes.”
“63. Take Monday off. The reduction in stress from missing a few days of work shrinks heart-attack and stroke risk by nearly 30 percent, according to a new study conducted at the State University of New York.”

Zed Shaw’s PDF Book on Deploying,Serving and Extending Ruby apps with Mongrel

I’ve just found out Zed Shaw (Creator of Mongrel) has released a PDF book about setting up/deploying Ruby applications with Mongrel.
Check it out: http://www.awprofessional.com/bookstore/
In case you haven’t used or heard of Mongrel before, I’ll have to say its the best Ruby server out there and I definitely recommend you try it out if you’re deploying Ruby or Ruby on Rails web apps.
The thing is just FAST and from what I’ve seen much more stable and secure than FastCGI. We’re using it for SugarStats (along with Nginx as the webserver/Rails request proxy) and the combination with Nginx is pretty much unbeatable.
