My Macrobiotic start…
So after some thoughtful researching and information gather I’ve decided to embrace a Macrobiotic life style. So this begins my Macrobiotic journey and I’m curious to see some of the beneficial outcomes.
What is Macrobiotics? Here is a small paragraph: (From: The Macrobiotic Guide)
Macrobiotics is known mainly as a balanced diet. But it is actually a way of life which involves every area of human activity using practical tools for personal growth and transformation of body, mind and spirit.
For people who want to adopt a restrictive macrobiotic diet, it is recommended to read more about it and even consult a macrobiotic counselor (especially in case of illness). It is generally recommended that the diet be adopted gradually, reducing animal products, refined flour, sugar, dairy products and adding more whole grain and vegetable quality foodsMacrobiotics is the art and science of health and longevity through the study and understanding of the relation and interactions between ourselves, the foods we eat, the lifestyles we choose to lead, and the environments in which we live.
Macro (= great) biotics (= life) or (view of life) means exactly this.
Whatever you do with your life that creates “great life” is macrobiotic.
It is a lifestyle of efficiency and simplicity dating back thousands of years. The daily food roughly breaks down to:
- 60% whole grains
- 30-25% Vegetables
- 5-10% Beans & Sea Vegetables
- 5% Soups
Also striving to keep all foods organic, using locally grown produce and eating in a seasonally changing method. It is somewhat similar to Vegan in that you don’t eat meat (besides some occasional fish as they come from a different ecosystem and are less contaminated by human interaction), no dairy and no sugars (besides the natural sweeteners: Syrus, Honey, Rice/Barley Malt).
From friends and family and people who have done this they have had some profound health benefits and overall greater well-being. So, here we go.

Hello! I am very excited for you as you start this journey. I have actually been skipping around the idea of adopting macrobiotics as a diet and a lifestyle. I have read a few books and am VERY interested in the philosophy. I just keep making excuses for myself. I am a law student and I am so busy studying. It seems like I do not have the time to start macrobiotics because it seems that I would need a clear head in order to embrace the philosophy fully. DO you agree? Am I just making excuses for myself? I am 26 years old and I want to put my health first now – not later – and I believe macrobiotics will help me achieve the health I desire.
I also wonder if the macrobiotic lifestyle and a career in law are compatible. What I mean by this is really whether I am going to have too much balance for the chaotic world of law (and the demands such a career makes on someone). What do you do for a living, if i may ask.
Would love to hear about your experience with macrobiotics.
Best Regards,
Zena
Hello Zena!
Thank you for your kind words. I think it is also great about your aspirations with macrobiotics, regaining health & balance in your life through diet and your interest in macrobiotics. I definitely understand being very busy and in a hectic environment. I’m in a similar situation as I run my own full-time business doing website marketing, management and design for small businesses. But don’t think it will effect your outcome too much, unless you let it. Just like you said, there are many out there whom come up with excuses to put something off which I really just think are the old patterns and fears in our life holding us back. But it sounds like you’ve made the first steps in contemplating the benefit to your life and a healthy and balanced lifestyle could have for you. Also in regards to busy work and macrobiotics, I don’t think I would have had as much energy as I do to run my business without it. I’ve felt SO much better since starting and its giving me the greatest overall feeling, it is a very difficult and unique thing to explain.
I definitely think it is compatible with you. I suggest perhaps you ease yourself in rather than jumping in completely. And remembering that it is more a about a state of mind and balance in your life rather than simply a “diet you have to follow”. Though they’re recommended things in macrobiotics, its about balance, fluidity and what works for your body specifically. Hence why you’ll see much of the foods marked as “avoid” rather than “forbidden” or “banned and NEVER to be eaten”.
Thought my diet now is not “100%” what would be called “hardcore” macrobiotics, the majority of my diet is as it is what I feel through my intuation and listening to my body what works for me. My diet mainly consists of whole grains (brown rice, lots of whole grain hot cereals, millet, spelt etc), veggies, sea veggies, beans and some white fish.
Some times I’m “bad” and get to some junk food eating, but really it is from an empowered standpoint. I know what I’m eating, and I know the effects it will have in my body once processed and have made the decison if you will to do it. Which is what a big part of macrobiotics is for me, choice and taking 100% responsibility for your life. It quite a great thing
Its great you found my blog. I havn’t updated this section in a bit, because I’ve been working on a new site to put all my thoughts and info. I’ve been saving my simple recipies and taking pictures etc. I’m going to be launching it soon to put it on and allow others to post their recipies and experiences etc, to make a community resource. It should be really cool so look out for that, I’ll definitely post the update here when I launch it. Good luck with your life and feel free to ask me any questions you may have! Be well Zena.
