Copenhagen is quite a place indeed. We’ve gotten around a bit and had a chance to feel a small part of the city. So far from what I’ve seen its very nice place. Everyone speaks english, the economy is booming at the moment I guess, the bus transit is excellent, there is plenty of monuments and sight seeing to do and its been beautifully sunny since we’ve been here!
The money thing is quite interesting though, where 10 Danish Krones = 1.34 Euro. So most meals and things cost anywhere from 60 to 250 krones. It looks expensive and takes a while to see what you’d consider really cheap with a price tag that says “150” on it.
I think its great that most things are free, education, university etc etc. Thats because of the HUGE tax everyone has to pay. They tax EVERYTHING here, and tax huge at that. Depending on how much you make they take out 40-60% take out of your paycheck. Most people I know would fall over dead if they heard that. Also more “luxury” items are usually taxed 2-3x more than their selling price. Such as gas, chocolate, alcohol, cars, etc etc. So essentially when you buy a car, you’re pay what it costs rolling out of the factory plus 2x that cost in tax. So you pay for 3 and get 1. Awesome!
No but seriously, they’ve compensated for the cost of living and its not a big deal at all for the residents who seem quite content on eating out and buying this and that for themselves.
I went on a 2 1/2 hr sight seeing tour which was very informative in fact and fun. We found out all sorts of information on one of the great kings and how he pretty much had everything important built in the city back in the 1600’s. He was sworn in at age 11, had 1 wife and 3 mistresses, had 23 children and was a great man apparently.
Carlsburg beer is the local hero around here, very heavily pushed. I guess the buddwiser of denmark. It is quite good but after it being hyped so much I was disappointed as it did not differ really at all from any other pilsner out of europe. From my taste sampled tongue I still say Belgium still has the best beers by far.
Walking out in the town I spent most of my time calculating the krone-to-euro conversion and budgeting my money which I think I’ve done a great job of so far. Its been a journey trying to stay on my diet while here but we’ve managed to find some great restaurants that have some sort of vegetarian/vegan menu’s I can play with. The fish out here is great as it is a harbor city. There are fast food places galore and a 7/11 (yes 7-11), McDonalds, Burger King and KFC on every corner.
As for our room we really got hooked up. Thanks to Kizzy’s friend who works at the Mercure hotel, we were situated in a junior suite. Complete with a separate bedroom, living room area with couch, refrigerator, water boiler, stocking shelves, balcony, 2 desks, 2 chairs and 2 coffee tables. This is totally awesome. What is not totally awesome is their high speed internet in their rooms is 150 krones, i.e 20 euro for any one 24-hr period. So you’d better have a lot to do at one time to pay basically a months worth of internet access and condense it into 24-hrs. Hence why I’ve been offline.

I know this was on my sidebar but its just insane. If you havn’t seen this you have to check out out, it just completely dominates the shark.
A giant octopus takes on a shark in a video like something from a horror movie, Octopuses are remarkable creatures, and are much more intelligent than you may think.
